FAQS

1. How is No-Show™ Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 different from Face Shield Classic SPF 50?

Our Total Protection™ Face Shield SPF products are formulated with Iron Oxides which offer a tint to them, in a range of shades and effects, whereas No-Show™ Mineral does not contain any iron oxides and is untinted. While Face Shield Classic leaves no color coverage for many of our customers, we know many still have a need for an all-mineral, untinted sunscreen without white cast. Our untinted, all-mineral No-Show™ sunscreen provides the same powerful Total Protection™ and skin-health benefits (hydration, calming, free radical defense) as our Face Shields, it:

– is ideal for someone who does not want tint due to transfer onto clothing (i.e. men and shirt collars):

– provides the sheerest-of-the-sheer aesthetic for deeper skin tones who have often had to use chemical filters to avoid white cast

– is also great for the Face Shield user on days when they want to be color/makeup free, (like working out), or using on hands, and body.

There are so many places and faces where No-Show™ Mineral can be used for powerful, all-mineral defense without compromising between protection and skin that looks beautifully like your skin.

2. Is there a color/tint to No-Show™ Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50?

No. Total Protection™ No-Show™ Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 does not have a color or tint to it. It is white when dispensed and blends away sheer so your skin looks beautifully like your skin.

3. How is there HEV or blue light defense in this product if it does not contain iron oxides?

In addition to being a powerful sunscreen active ingredient, Zinc Oxide also provides the therapeutic benefit of defending against blue light. Total Protection™ No-Show™ Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 was tested to protect skin from 38.2% of blue light. For additional defense, follow with one of our Total Protection™ sunscreen brushes.

4. What is the texture and finish of No-Show™ Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50?

No-Show™ Mineral Sunscreen is an ultra-lightweight formula with a milky, fluid texture and is slightly lighter weight than Face Shields. It blends so easily and beautifully into skin you’ll forget it’s there. Skin is hydrated and left with a velvety, soft finish.

5. Do you recommend this for men?

Yes. We would recommend Total Protection™ No-Show™ Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 for men and anyone who prefers a sunscreen without color or tint for certain occasions or events.

6. Will it work with all skin tones?

Total Protection™ No-Show™ Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 is formulated without any color or tint to it as was designed to work for all skin tones. It has been tested to wear sheer for a wider range of skin tones.

Pro Tips:

-When applying mineral sunscreens it helps to start from the center of the face and blend outward and upward in a single direction, rather than back and forth or in circular motions.

-Additionally, for deeper skin tones, apply gradually in small amounts, blending (outward and upward) in between layers until the full amount is applied. (i.e., if you prefer the 2-finger dose method, rather than applying the amount from both fingers at the same time, apply just one finger length amount of product first, blend, then apply the second finger length amount of product and blend. This will ensure you have applied the amount needed for full SPF coverage and will better help to achieve the No-Show™, white-cast free aesthetic.

7. How should this be applied? How much do I apply?

Shake well before each use. Apply liberally and evenly to face and/or body. Blend well – take a few extra seconds to blend thoroughly, then allow to set. This may take a minute or two. As with all sunscreens, reapply at least every 2 hours.

Pro Tips:

-Ensure complete SPF coverage:

– Apply at least a nickel-sized amount OR generously dispense onto the length of 2 fingers then apply to face

– Use additional product for neck and body

-For deeper skin tones, apply gradually in small amounts, blending in between layers until the full amount is applied

37. What does the PA rating mean?

The PA rating system measures the level of protection from UVA rays, which are known to cause pigment darkening in the skin. It measures the amount of time a product would protect your skin from darkening.

The following shows how much protection each PA score provides compared to unprotected skin. If your unprotected skin normally darkens/pigments after 5 min of UVA exposure:

PA Rating | Level of Protection | Total # of min before experiencing skin darkening/pigmentation

PA+         2-4 times   10-20 minutes

PA++      4-8 times    20-40 minutes

PA+++    8-16 times  40-80 minutes

PA++++ >16 times    >80 minutes

Total Protection™ No-Show™ Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 has a PA++++ rating.

38. What is Enviroscreen® Technology?

EnviroScreen® Technology is proprietary to Colorescience®. EnviroScreen® Technology uses patented active ingredients, Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide, that create a barrier preventing free radical formation and oxidative stress. These patented actives are combined with specialty ingredients that, together, work synergistically to protect skin from damage caused by exposure to UVA/UVB rays, pollution, blue light (also known as High Energy Visible, or HEV, light), and infrared radiation.

39. Can you explain how adherence/water- and sweat- resistance is tested?

Colorescience® follows the FDA guidelines for testing water resistance or adherence to the skin after exposure to water. A panel of 10 people apply the product to their skin prior to being immersed in a whirlpool (of moving or circulating water) for 20-minute cycles. After 20 minutes in the whirlpool, panelists exit the whirlpool before immersing themselves again. For 40 minutes water resistance, panelists are immersed in the water for two 20-minute cycles. For 80 minutes water resistance, this is done a total of 4 times. After all cycles are completed, the SPF that is remaining on the skin is measured. If after 80 minutes in the whirlpool, the SPF remaining is at least 50, the result is an SPF 50 with 80 minutes of water resistance.

40. How do you measure pollution protection?

We measure our pollution protection by directly measuring free radicals created from UV + pollution events on unprotected skin and skin protected with Total Protection™ No-Show™ Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50. We use a testing technique called electron spin resonance (ESR) that uses a combination of a magnetic field and electron magnetic waves to directly detect the unpaired electrons of free radicals.

41. How do you measure blue (HEV) light protection?

Blue (HEV) light protection is tested by measuring the ability of the formula to block light in the HEV spectrum that would otherwise reach the skin. In practice, this is done by applying the formula to a transparent substrate at the same dose level (2mg/cm2) used in the FDA Monograph SPF test. The substrate is then placed at the entrance of an integrating sphere detector which captures all the light passing through the sample. This configuration is the same as that used in the FDA Monograph Critical Wavelength measurement and mimics the situation of a formula applied to the skin. The percentage of HEV light blocked is calculated by comparing the intensity of the light transmitted through the formula to the incident light at each wavelength throughout the HEV spectrum (400–490 nm).
